Changed ignition timing, now car hesitates. Wtf?
Today I replaced my O2 sensor with a brand new one and decided I was going to correct my ignition timing since I hadn't checked it correctly after I put the motor in. Car is a 92 SE-R, by the way, and it's totally stock with a JDM DE and no EGR. I warmed the car up, raced the engine a few times and cut it off. I unplugged the TPS and started the car again. I checked timing just to see where I was at and it was like 25 - 30 degrees BTDC. So I was like holy sh*t and set it to 15 degrees. I went and drove it and it kinda sounded like it was pinging so I changed it again to about 13 degrees. No pinging, but the car feels unbelievably slow and it surges and hesitates really hard when cold. I can feel a very slight hesitation when warm, too. What the hell did I do? Could it possibly be that problem where the rubber wears out on the crank pulley and it allows the outside part to rotate on the inside giving you inaccurate timing marks? Tomorrow I'm going to try to set it back where it was and see if this fixes the problem.
