Changed ignition timing, now car hesitates. Wtf?
Today I replaced my O2 sensor with a brand new one and decided I was going to correct my ignition timing since I hadn't checked it correctly after I put the motor in. Car is a 92 SE-R, by the way, and it's totally stock with a JDM DE and no EGR. I warmed the car up, raced the engine a few times and cut it off. I unplugged the TPS and started the car again. I checked timing just to see where I was at and it was like 25 - 30 degrees BTDC. So I was like holy sh*t and set it to 15 degrees. I went and drove it and it kinda sounded like it was pinging so I changed it again to about 13 degrees. No pinging, but the car feels unbelievably slow and it surges and hesitates really hard when cold. I can feel a very slight hesitation when warm, too. What the hell did I do? Could it possibly be that problem where the rubber wears out on the crank pulley and it allows the outside part to rotate on the inside giving you inaccurate timing marks? Tomorrow I'm going to try to set it back where it was and see if this fixes the problem.

If you dont have the consult plug and try to get it into timing mode manualy its a real PITA, and often from my expierence doesn't work quite right, there are several ways posted out there:

If you know your car is running perfectly or damn near it, you can unplug the TPS sensor and change it as it is. I did this on the dyno and it worked and gave me the positive and negative changes. The voodoo dance seems to be some sort of "clear all" system check to make sure there is nothing really wrong with your car and really does nothing. A consult cable is very effective and avoids any confusion.

Your values seem weird, however, so there is a red flag for your specific case.

Maybe the crank pulley rubber has seperated, given you a false value that you tried to compensate for and are now stuck in hesitation.

What marks were the small needle indicator on the block pointing to before and after changes?

I bet car wasn't in correct timing mode. Get a Consult cable off Ebay for cheap and retest. Where is the bolt position on your distributor?

It was reading like 30 degrees before I changed anything and 15 after. One thing I didnt do was put the car in timing mode after I unplugged the tps. Today I just moved the distributor back where it was and it fixed the hesitation and my power is back. Im going to try putting it in timing mode and see what happens.

Anouther thing that will throw it all off wether in timing mode via the consult cable or voodoo mode, is if the fans kick on. It will throw off your readings and sometimes you have to put it back into timing mode. Best thing to do is scribe marks on the distributor and upper mount bracket for specific timing once you get it into timing mode.

Where is the distributor if you look at the oval whole on top? It should be in the middle, if it is there now i would say the pulley has separated and spun and the timing marks are no longer valid.

I suppose my car wasn't correctly put in timing mode. I tried again today and it fixed everything. When I checked it with the timing light it was reading 0 degrees. Thanks guys, car is set at 15 degrees now. :]
