Thread: how bad is extra oil?

I may have in a drunken fog last night thought I was low on oil. I added an extra qt. I was checking it hot car with the car off and it wasn't touching the dipstick. Now this morn I check it running and it's about an inch over Max on the stick.

Have put about 20 miles on the car like this driving to work this am. Just want to be sure I'm not causing any harm to my motor. Only checked the oil because I'm about600m over my oil change time but am to broke til next week to do it. I do have a drip from my oil pan so I thought it was plausible to be that low last night but now I question how low I really was and how much extra oil I now have in my motor.

With too much oil you can hydrolock your engine

Also how much miles do you go before you change your oil?

I typically go 3k on my oil. This time I let it go to 3600-3800 miles. Is that extra probably .75qt of oil way too much? Enough to worry about. Oil is getting changed next week.

Changing the oil every 3k isn't necessary. Do it every 5k and just get it changed next week then go 5k for the next one

You aren't suppose to check it while the car is running. Check it while it again while it's off and I can almost guarantee it's on the dot or 1/16 of an inch over.

Ahh its too late for me lol I didn't catch that... Yeah check it with it off.. With it running the oil can splash around on the dipstick giving it a inaccurate reading

my GFs dad for some reason thought her oil was low and poured in an extra 3 or 4 quarts

she pulled up to my house with a plume of oil smoke because it was blowing past the rings and burning like crazy. I drained out 3 quarts and it has been perfect ever since.

A little extra oil is fine and will keep the head lubricated well. A little more oil is pretty bad, and will cause a lot of frothing, windage and blow-by.
