Tranny blew up.....
I am the Original Ower of my 1993 SE-R. Never drag raced, never abused. On Roebling Road Road Course for two (2) twenty minute runs.

My transmission initially lost 5th gear, at about 50K under Nissan Extended Warranty. $1,500.00 and all I paid was the $25.00 deductable.

My transmission lost 5th gear again at about 156K. I paid an exhorbitant amount to have it rebuilt. This was about six years ago, pre-forum, and I was clueless.

I am now at 174K, and I just lost 1st and 3rd. Second works, reverse works, and I did not get going fast enough to test 4th and 5th. Nor do I give a sh*t if they work at this point.

Mike is going to pull the tranny and crack it apart. He is just curious what broke and if it is both easy and cheap to fix. In this specific case, he is under instructions to discuss with me any fix whatsoever. Normally I would just tell him to "fix it, whatever it is."

If that damn tranny is anything other than "cheap and easy" to fix (not likely from my very limited expertise) it is going bye-bye.

F*ck that cheap-ass, piss-poorly engineered, should-have-been-a-factory recall, gutless, weak-sauce, worthless pile of motherf*cking metal scrap.

Rant over.

I figure tonight I will be searching for what B15/P11 tranny would be best suited for a VE (DE now, VE soon) that will be used as a daily-driver. Including plenty of around town driving, and some long freeway trips. I *think* it is the B15 that has the best gearing for my specific uses.

Please do not encourage me to buy a B13 tranny, nor the B14 tranny with the half-assed Nissan crappy semi-fix. B14 trannies still lose 5th gear. Nissan never addressed the issue properly until the B15 tranny. Period. Further, if my stupid-motherf*cking B13 tranny will not hold up with a DE, I'm sure as hell not going to be using it with 40+ more horses.

Just FYI the 5th gear pop-out does have an actual, real life fix on the B13 transmissions.

I can't even begin to imagine what would cause 1st and 3rd to fail but not 2nd. It's not like they are using the same shift fork or anything. I'd bet it's not going to be an easy fix. Great opportunity to jump head first into the B15/P11 transmission.

Good luck in your search, and let us know anything fun and interesting you find out that we might not know already (like if you want to avoid going to a hydraulic clutch and/or cable shifter for some reason you can get a late model P10 transmission with all the beefyness of the P11 but with the old school stuff too*).

*Don't quote me on that, it's just something I heard.

B15 for a VE no question. I have a B15 trans in my B13 and that's what you want. I used to be turbo and thought the gearing was a bit short. I have since de-turboed the car and the shorter gearing of the B15 trans pairs nicely with the NA powerband of the SR20DE. Someone else correct me if I'm wrong but the shorter gearing should allow the VE to stay on the hot cam profiles a little easier. Plus these transmissions seem to be popping up quite often for sale on the forums too.

The P10 trans is no stronger than a B13/B14 trans....do not go this route. It is so easy to convert the B15 trans to work with the B13 shift linkage/clutch cable it is a non issue.

For a transmission to keep a VE on cams easier, it needs to have the gear ratios closer to each other. Just being shorter (by the same amount between each gear) is not good enough (exactly like putting in a shorter final drive ratio).

That's what I've always heard. I'll have to did up that thread I remember (I have it saved at home). Not trying to make this into a thread it shouldn't be, but I'd love to get some info too if I could. Hang on.

If you have VE intentions, and I know that you do, get a B15 tranny. I have one in my SE-R, and it rocks with a VE.

Shawn . I know you want to take care of this as best possible. However I'll share my opinion with you. If your intention is to just keep your car at regular VE power levels. A b15/p11 trans is a bit overkill.

I cracked the case on my original trans around 120k miles. This was just an install error on my part. Tranny fell and hit the concrete. What I'm getting at is that I had a 94 transmission with no pop out. THe trans on there now is also a b13 trans and it holds fifth gear just fine. From what I've read a possible cause for the pop out problem is that people are holding down the shifter( keeping weight on it) while they drive.

There are several guys you'll talk to that have never had pop out on a b13 trans. Nissan issued a fix for the trans, and the b14 transmissions are post fix. I'd say don't spend more money then you have to. If you were trying to go turbo then I could understand getting a b15/p11 but if your going to stay at lower power levels the weaker transmission will do the job.

If you see this as an opportunity for shorter gearing. The 16VE transmission offers shorter gears.

Meh.

I've been fortunate enough with my 98 B14 tranny (non-lsd obviously), that I haven't broken it to bits yet. I definitely plan on upgrading to P11 though, because I don't like driving 85mph on the highway at 4krpm.
