Heat wrapping vs Ceramic Coating a header
Hey was up I know that ceramic coating looks a lot nicer and doesn't rust but I was told from an engineer that heat wrapping a header causes the header to rust from the inside. I wanted to know your guy's input in this and has it happened to anyone yet from experience? Please help me out thanks

It is known to cause rust yes, if you have an SS header it probably wont be as bad. I didn't hesitate wrapping my header because I have the SSAC header and it costs $100, so it's cheap to replace it haha.

if its wraped.. it keeps the heat inside the primaries thus keeping the air hotter making it move faster? somnone chime in on that.....


and it keeps under hood temps way down...ask me how i know?

Yup, air that cools down becomes heavier and doesn't flow out as easily thus results in back pressure.

Engine bay also becomes cooler, but you will have fiberglass all over the place. Radiator fans seem to do that

Nope. Common misconception. Air cooling down and slowing down resulting in back pressure is not the issue. The faster the air moves past an adjacent merging pipe the more it will scavenge from that pipe (local pressure in adjacent pipe will be lower). After all merges are made, exhaust temps mean nothing for flow. You could put refrigerator coils around your exhaust and it wouldn't make a difference.

Keeping the exhaust in the header (specifically) hot is for increased scavenging effects. Also lower under hood temps as mentioned earlier. It could also help or hurt catalytic converter and O2 sensor operation depending on placement in exhaust. After the collectors are merged, temps mean nothing.

On topic: header wrap promotes rust because it holds water and other crap next to the (bare?) metal allowing rust to form easier. It can also rub through paint and coatings to help rust. I painted my downpipe and wrapped it if you're curious. I'm too cheap for ceramic coatings or stainless steel/titanium/inconel. =/

ceramic coating comes off after a few years and then the header will rust any way. It also does not keep the under hood temps down as well as wrap. I have my fuji header wrapped because it killed a alternator with radiated heat.

What i plan on doing is painting my SS header with high temp paint then wrapping for added protection. You could always replace and repaint the header every year or so if you were worried about it.
