Oil pickup
This is from a RWD SR20 http://zilvia.net/f/1759919-post72.html

Heres a sr20det tip if you guys dont know this allready.

The stock sr oil pickup is only tack welded in 4 small spots.

This leads to vibration breaking those tacks and the oil pickup falling off. The end result is a blown motor.

The correct way to solve this is to completely clean the metal on the pickup, then using a tig welder (no spatter), weld a thin non penatrive bead around the pickup tube.

Then since there was heat applied to the gasket surface it needs to be decked. You can do this with a file.

What does our oil pickup look like? Is that something our pickups could benefit from?

My dads KA the other end fell off ... Broke the engine from oil starvation on hard cornering ... But yea, I can see that being an issue ... Pretty sure the FWD SR is similar ...never seen one break off before ... but for hard use , it may be a good idea ..

Added some pics so people wouldn't have to click out to another forum.

If someone can post a picture of their pickups from a DE and a DET that would be great.

I happen to have three different styles kicking around at the moment (highport, early RR, late RR). The highport has a support arm that bolts to the bearing beam. Both RR's have supports welded to the bend. I'll get some pics.

ive never seen that happen on any sr motor, thats gotta be a one in a million thing, Our fwd pickups have a brace that bolts onto the girdle. so that would keep it from falling completely off, but again ive never seen that happen on any of our motors ever. lol and ive been around for a while.

Do you think it is possible for us Non-RR guys to benefit from the later roller rocker pickups?

It's an awesome design, practically impossible to clog. They are all different depths though, designed to work best with the matching oil pans. If you notice, it's a little shorter than the others. That half inch or so of extra depth is pretty important when you are talking about oil levels in the pan.
