Picked up a new commuter
So in a quest for gas mileage and a little bit more fun commuting to work and back ( approx 15 miles and about 20 minutes) I bought myself a scooter to ride to work, now you may be thinking Jimmi on a scooter?

This isn't just any scooter, it's a Derbi GPR 50. These scooters look more like racing motorcycles than scooters and boast a 6 speed manual transmission, 50cc engine and the like. I was told by the previous owner that he averaged about 65 mpg. I got it up to about 50mph so far and it's pretty smooth.

Big props to Meeners for talking to me at the convention and really lighting the fire in me to buy one.

That certainly is not any ol scooter. That looks serious. And a 6 speed transmission to boot? And you don't have to grind away a part of the sub-frame!

Once I get home if the rain holds off I will take some better pictures. Looking at helmets and safety gear before I venture too far away from home.

65mpg? My honda 750 does 60mpg or better and goes 120mph if I want it to. While that bike/scooter was prob. way cheaper a new fuel injected 250 gets 80+mpg and can be driven on the highway. My buddy is a scooter nut and has a hopped up Zumba that does 80mph but I just can't get into the scooter craze. Cool scooter I bet with an efi kit and t15 turbo that thing would be fun as hell.

I like it a lot. I've been contemplating a scooter to get me back and forth to work, but didn't want the stigma of a "moped". This thing looks great!

For what I paid for the scooter it was a great deal, the issue I have with the actual motorcycle is paying for the class, then registration and the monthly insurance. The Derbi does not need insurance, a special class, registration etc. Keep in mind the MPG are what the previous owner told me who was 6 foot 4 inches and about 250.

I have definitely enjoyed my ride to work, picked up a Helmet too just to be safe.

Where'd you pick it up? I checked Derbi's website but I can't seem to find US distributors.

This is a 1999 Derbi pulled out of the US in 2005. Basically the 98-00 look like mine and the newer ones look a little different.
