2013 Ford Focus SE
I really like where Ford has gone with their vehicles from the last couple years. They really put in the work to make their vehicles more attractive, more reliable, built more solid inside and out, interior redesign that I really like on almost all their vehicles. Im looking at possibly trading in our 05 MDX for a 2013 Ford Focus SE Sedan. My wife does a lot of driving and while the mdx has been 100% outstanding as far as reliability with almost 140k miles on it now, it just doesn't get that great of mileage and we really don't need an SUV anymore. I've looked into just about every import out there and just don't like anything comparable to the Ford in areas like Price, Mileage, and Styling. The next in line was a Toyota Corolla or Yaris but even a base Corolla which would be in the same class as the Focus size wise both is priced higher and doesn't get quite the mileage the Ford is supposed to get. Nissan, forget about it. Honda, nope, nothing comparable, Mazda, that was another option but still just not quite the vehicle that the Focus has to offer.

Any other takes on the decision. Gonna go test drive one and possibly if everything works out possibly come home with one. Options wise, I like the Ford Sync, easy to use. Interior styling is probably one of the best on the market for cars in that price range and class. Very stylish, simplistic, and comfortable. I had a 2012 Ford Fusion as a rental car and I actually liked it. Drove nice, again roughly the same styling inside as the Focus. Id opt for the Charcoal Black cloth interior vs having the vinyl seats. Trying to get the performance blue or the candy blue exterior.

I'm pretty set on the vehicle and as long as my wife loves it as well when she goes with me I think it will be my first brand new vehicle. Just want to see if anyone else has any takes on it. Opinions and experience welcome.

Here is one I'm looking at.

Is this for real, or like the NSX and other cars?

Yeah this one is for real, lol. This would be mainly my wifes car and yeah this isn't some sports car want/desire. Its more a necessity. She definitely needs something that gets better mileage. The mdx averages 18-20mpg with her driving it. Once i replace the bad converter on it it should bring it up a little where it should be but still nothing like the 38mpg the focus is supposed to get on the highway and 34/35 mixed that i've researched. It will save almost half on fuel costs.

While the ST is awesome, the car is not for me. lol. Plus the goal here is to keep the price out the door under 20k which should be easy enough.

The Focus is a neat car. One of my friends just got one and she loves it. Roomy as hell.

i feel like focus gets crappy withing a couple years from what i have seen. its pretty much a car from Europe so maybe they have gotten better.

The quality and new line of motors are worth the try. So far have proved themselves. Eh while I like the hyundais I just dont think im ready to get one yet plus they really dont have anything that competes with the focus in every aspect.

Yeah, the wifey so far doesn't like the Ford mainly because its a Ford and they don't have many color options. Price, mileage, and styling I just don't see anything else that can compare decently to it. I told her as long as she agrees to at least go look at one and drive one with me before tossing it out. She has a good point that since this will be our first brand new car that she wants one that she really likes.

Some others that have come up in the discussion are the Mazda 3 probably the hatchback more than likely because she wants the sportiness of the hatch. In the Indigo Blue Mica. I like the looks and it offers just a hair better mileage than the Focus with the 2.0L SkyActive engine. Downfall is that its not near as stylish on the interior as the Focus, exterior id say is about equal as I like both cars equally. Price wise, its significantly higher than the Focus by about $5,000.

Another one we may look at is the Honda CR-Z. Has a nice color she wants, stylish inside and out. Only thing I don't like is that its a Hybrid. I've personally been around Hybrids and worked on them and I know from experience that they have issues and most of the really expensive issues never happen while under warranty but about 20-40k miles after warranty is up. The batteries being one of the main things and they are not cheap. They tend to have other finiky issues as well that just make them a pain to own. Another downside is that its a two seater. Not practical for what we want. So we probably wont even look at this one more than likely. Reviews on it are crappy as well. Excessive road noise, no rear seats, poor visibility out the side and rear, no technology in it at all as far as comfort items.

I think its going to come down between the Focus and Mazda3
