AC Compressor Confusion
So based on the info supplied by Rock Auto, Advance Auto, Autozone, Amazon and eBay the AC compressor in my 93.5 G20 is a model NVR 140S, in fact all list this compressor from 91-96. How can this be with the change from R12 to R134a? Same compressor? Advance Auto even shows it fits my '92 SE-R which runs R12.

So then I whip out the FSM's for the G. The supplemental manual states the compressor has been changed to a model DKV-14C. I found pics of this one and it doesn't look anything like the one on my car. Then for kicks I looked up a '93 and '94 SE-R on Rock Auto and they both show it as a DKV-14D.

I's baffled.

So the supplemental manual is wrong, at least in my case. I don't have a DKV-14C compressor, I have a NVR 140S as all searches indicate. I also found further confirmation that the NVR 140S can run both R12 and R134a, not to mention that I have 134a in my P10 and R12 in the SE-R with the same compressor.

Double win. I indeed have the correct replacement compressor and I learned something new today. Now I just have to figure the right O-rings to buy...

O-ring package from your local auto parts provider work. I re-did all of them on my G20. I have no clue about the compressor. It worked before we took it all a part.

Both will work with R12 & R134a.

Just need to use the proper PAG oil, Evaporator Etc.

I have plenty of R12 still if you need.

I did the a/c in my 92 NX (originally r12) with a used 93 compressor from an SE-R that I got here on the forums. I made sure the label on it said it was R12 and R134 compatible. I got the b14 dryer because the material is compatible with PAG oil and R134 and won't fall apart in the system as I have heard the r12 dryers will. I had to modify the dryer slightly because the centering pin is on the opposite side of the hole, and I didn't feel like changing my lines.

I put in the compressor and dryer and vacuumed the system for a couple hours with a rental pump from autozone and charged it with R134. It's been ice cold for almost a year.

@Will thats exactly what I need to do.

OP,I have found that some compressors mount differently too so be aware as you pick a compressor that you may need the bracket too if itsbolt spacing different.

That's right, I forgot some brackets are different, good info there. I believe there is a thread... doh, of course, everything I'm thinking of is from one thread:

here is a bracket comparison from the linked thread:

The hardest part is drilling a hole for the alignment pin, I'm trying to remember if I posted any photos of it... I'll try to grab one right now.

@eggman, I just got my b14 strapped to a trailer to tow to store at my mom's place till I graduate, I'll be passing by your area a few times in the next few weeks, I should stop in.

I read that "Beat the heat" thread several times now.

I got a reman'd NVR140S for the '91-'96 G20 from 4 Seasons and I'm sticking with R134a. I dropped the splash shield last night and compared it to the compressor currently on the car. The bottom bolt holes are dead on so it should bolt right up. I need to pick up a drier, R134a, oil and o-ring set, then borrow the pump/gauges and get 'er done.

Anyone know if I can do the swap from the underside without removing the alternator? I can get to all four mounting bolts from the underside, I'm just concerned that it won't drop low enough with the top line attached.
