Another Clutch Bites The Dust!
Curious on what clutch everyone is running? I blew up three southbend clutches (The strongest one they carry for our cars), their discs just kept breaking. And now the ACT is slipping on me! Starting to think my only option now is twin disk. The car has never seen more than 21psi and never rev'd over 7600rpm (about 450-460whp and 360-370 ft lbs tq). The ACT and Southbend are both rated at 410+ tq so I'm just confused. Thinking maybe the flywheel might be the issue(I've used it for the last 7 years but always resurfaced it between clutch changes. Its a lightweight flywheel but cant remember the brand because its been so long since I bought it.) What clutch do you guys recommend for this power level?

I recommend a double or triple disc clutch for that torque output on the street. Not because a single can't hold it (for sure it can) but because a double or triple with the right friction materials and springs will be as streetable as stock, and last just as long, while also holding the torque.

Read the first two pages: http://www.motoiq.com/magazine_articles/id/1466/project-evo-viii-part-4-getting-more-trackside-grip-killing-some-slip.aspx

Cusco might make you a disc we've all been dreaming of.

That Cusco design is very nice and unique but I wouldn't be suprised if it had a $2500+ pricetag on it! and lets be honest, in this community we might have "maybe" a handful of people that would be interested, and at that price, I wouldn't be one of them Speaking on twin disks in general tho, I hear they wear pretty fast and my car see's alot of driving from ohio to wisconsin, illinois, and new york, so thats what really concerns me. I would really love to find a reliable single disc setup.

Have any first hand experience with them? I've always steer'd away from unsprung setups just because of the beating I hear they put on the tranny

If you read the MotoIQ link you'll see why most twin disc wear quickly when driven on the street, and why this specific one doesn't. It can also be had with organic pad material which would last longer and may actually be able to hold the torque as well. Also if you're doing highway miles, that's nothing on a clutch. I think you're probably somewhere in the ballpark about that price though. If that's way too much to swallow, you're probably going to have to stick with the Clutchmasters FX500 or other setups just as harsh (if not harsher if you go with an iron disc).

You might also look into fitting a larger flywheel in there, so you can go with a larger, milder setup and still hold the torque.

Hmm... Never thought about that. I'm tempted to try a southbend pressure plate(rated at 470ft tq) and act 6 puck disc, and see how that holds on a fresh resurfaced flywheel.

Twin Disk,

Comp twin disk is nice and you get used to it driving on the street quickly. I daily drove mine with a twin disk. 430whp, 390wtq and 500+whp, 450wtq on weekends and at the track. I did eventually have an issue with the disk splines stripping out on me. It was determined that it was a manufracturing defect and Comp was more than willing to send me new disks for basicly nothing. But I went with the 6 speed swap and got the larger splined disks to suite.

And it has a good pricetag at about 1200 bucks for the whole setup which includes flywheel and all. Cant go wrong.

the fx500 is only comes unsprung with a choice of 4 puck, 6 puck or sintered iron disc. The fx400 has a sprung disc.
