Got a great deal on motor and turbo today need opinions...
I just bought a fully built de that has been run for maybe 1 min max. Here is what the guy said about the motor:
-Block honed and bored
-Block parallel deck
-align hone block
-installed eagle rods
-new piston rings
-multi angle valve job and surface
-new valve seals
-new Wiseco pistons

I also picked up a T3/04 on a log manifold and Tial wastegate all for $1600. My questions are I just found out that the pistons are 9:1 and the garrett t3/04 is oil cooled only. Should I buy 8.5:1 Pistons and sell the 9:1s or just not boost over say 15 psi with the big turbo? Also is just running a oil cooled turbo a bad idea or should I just set my turbo timer for a little while longer?

leave the 9:1 pistons in and get the car tuned right.

If you go water cooled you won't need that turbo timer. The 9:1 pistons are great for response, but won't like boost as much as 8.5:1. I would keep them. I don't know where you live, but a lot of the boost you can push is dependent on what conditions you live in. I am high alt and pushed 18psi on my disco potato daily with no ill effects on stock DET.

I wouldn't push it past 16-17psi though. 15psi should be safe with a decent tune.

How much boost will depend on your setup , what t3/t04e do you have? this are very good turbos with the right lubrication and very cheap to rebuild .With the right tune 18-20 lbs on pump its not a problem on your comp and build motor, if you want to boost it highier buy some type of alcohol water injection with a failsafe this will take care of your motor for a long time.
turbo timer its need it.
30-40seg if you are not running the car otherwise 2 to 3 min will be ok.

Oil cooled turbos are fine. My Greddy turbo is oil cooled only and pulls hard as ****. YOu just need to make sure that your oil return is free flowing and completely downhill and that your oil feed iss free flowing also and your good.

9:1 is perfect for boost. It will take the same amount of boost as a 8:1 set.

Hell all the VE-T's we have built have been at 9.3:1.

9:1 is perfect for boost.

Thank you all for your replys... I am upgrading from my W10 avenier with the stock T25 on 12 psi. I live in FL so have no problem with altitude. I am currently running a Calum ECU for my stock 370s and a N60 MAF. I will need a new rom for the 9:1, probably 500cc or above injectors and a N62 MAF. As for the oil drain it is SS and looks to be at LEAST -8AN (its HUGE). I will start a thread and post pics soon. Thanks again!
