High HP turbo w/street tires -- Traction Advice?
Hey,

I plan on going to the strip this summer and I'll probably be rolling street tires. That being the case, what are you guys with high HP turbo cars doing to help control traction?

My profec B II EBC has a high/low setting for boost. I'm thinking this would help, but I can't really 'test' this theory. It would seem to make sense that lowering the boost 1st - 2nd and then raising it in top of 2nd or 3rd would help get better times due to controlling wheel spin. I've launched and driven my car w/low stock boost setting and I seem to get better traction but I'm not convinced I'm actually gaining speed any quicker versus spinning my way up to speed.

Is a tiered EBC setup the way to go or do you just use your foot to control spin or do you just redline through the spin? What is truly the quickest for times? I know there's gotta be people on the forum who have been through this already so no need for me to reinvent the wheel here. Any advice would be appreciated. Launching and getting a turbo FWD car up to speed is a bitch lol.

Thanks for the help!

Drag Radials. I wouldnt even waste my time trying to take my NX to the drag strip on street tires. It would just frustrate me.

M/T ET streets, size all dependent on your preference

I prefer the BFG drag radials! They are a nice compromise between sticky and lasting.

Gomba street tires are fun on the street. With a High hp fwd car I would just buy some DR's or slicks. Its all fun and games until you get that one chance to blow the doors off a new Z06 and you dont have the right tires so you get drug down the track just spinning away!

Would having a tiered boost setup help at least? I wanted to keep the street tires at the track to kind of get a baseline of what the car would run w/tires I usually have on it(on the street). It's also a little challenge trying to get best times on street tires.

I know slicks would be best, but honestly I don't see myself buying tires for the track as I don't go enough to justify the cost.

I understand what your saying. Take it to the track in street trim to really get a idea of how it will run balls to the wall on the street. An electric boost controller will work. But if it were me and since your only running 16psi Id just hook up a scramble boost button. So you can be running low boost and once you get traction just hit the scramble button and youll have your high boost right there too.

Just put it this way, when i was on my t25 jwt s4 cams, 8psi of boost setup I ran 13.0@110 on my every day street tires and it took some significant babying of the throttle in 1st and 2nd gear to keep from just blowing the tires off. 2.1 60ft as well. Just going to slicks on the same setup i went 12.4@110 mph w/ 1.71 60ft. I could launch the hell out of it without worrying about wheel hop and could full throttle in every gear.

If your adiment about using street tires then all i can say is good luck and hopefully you wont get any wheel hop as it will kill your trans quick. If your over 300whp its gonna be really really hard to get a decent time.

Hmm, this is what I was thinking. I can rig up a remote boost button for my EBC so I can switch from hi/lo boost on the fly. Maybe keep it on wastegate pressure from 1-2nd gear then turn the boost up from there.

One idea my local friends and I have been discussing is maybe attaching the button to the throttle or gas pedal so when I'm at 100% throttle it will turn it to hi boost, but when I'm at 90% or so throttle from 1-2 it will be on the low setting. It'd kind of act like a NOS WOT switch.

If you're making any real power you should be smoking street tires in 3rd and 4th so you will have your hands full. If you have to turn the boost down just to make it down track, were is the fun. Street tires spin more at the track than they do on the street.

On a fwd nissan it's a waste of time to run street tires on the track when the boost is turned up.
