Still getting Code
So i have a 96 SER all stock i was trying to get stickers for, for my dad to use to save some mileage on his truck. Got it with a crankshaft position sensor and I believe knock sensor code, P0335 and P0325. Car runs fine, idles fine and everything. I noticed that the crankshaft position sensor was old and deteriorated so I got a new (to me) one on there. Upon trying to remove it it flaked apart and i was no longer able to simply pull it out so after picking at it then having my buddy torch it a bit, we were able to get it out. Is it possible that a small piece of the old magnet fell into the bell housing, but I dont think that would hurt anything? I cleared code and drove it about a half hour without CEL coming on. I parked it for about 3 days, started it up this morning and the CEL came on. I then just cleared the codes again and drove it to work. During my break I came back out to move it. About a minute after the car was started the codes came back.

Why would the code come back on? Like i said, car runs and drive just fine so I'm not sure whats up. Cant get it passed with CEL on

I wish I knew. I just wanted to add how much I hate this emissions crap in PA registered cars.

My friend from NJ just got a brand new Civic. Her inspection is good until 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a double take when I saw it.

PA needs some reform. You have to get a brand 2014 model inspected in 10 months from date of purchase, ridiculous. Especially in the emisssions areas (Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) - it's the same thing with not being able to purchase beer in gas stations and such, the distributor lobbyists. Same thing.... they want your car up on the lift once a year to find more problems (that either exist or don't exist or somewhere in between) so they can get more of your money. PA has constitutional firearms laws, NJ is Nazi-like in that extent, but with motor vehicles, it switches. Pa has the 4th strictest inspection laws in the U.S. behind California, NY, Hawaii, and CT I believe. Florida doesn't even HAVE INSPECTIONS! I think cars should be checked for good brakes, tires, and lights working. That's just safety. Not a check engine light code because of you removing the EGR etc.

The only thing I can think is that maybe one of the teeth on the flywheel is chipped, would make sense why the CEL keeps coming back on?

I may even part it out in the future if i'm feeling up to it. Only thing is I dont really have much storage space for parts and I dont know how'd i'd move the shell if i took off the axles/hubs/wheels...etc cuz i'd want to part out everything I cant keep lol

Let's back up 2 steps... Code P0335 and P0235 ??? Do you mean P0335 & P0325 ???

Big Difference here. We can't help you without the correct info ya know.

Ridiculous... not really. Do they want more of your money, I'm sure they do. All laws are brought about for reasons. No beer in gas stations makes some sense - At some point in time, someone probably had just got beer, was driving drunk and killed someone.

Their are 2 ways that people usually find out there is something wrong with their car. It breaks down and leaves them stranded or the mechanic discovers it during an inspection. Wouldn't you want to know that your 'ole ladies car tires have steel cord hanging out of the inside of them ???

"BIG BROTHER" wanting your car up on a lift once a year IS A GOOD IDEA IN MY OPINION and I live in California. To understand where I come from you need to know that I am an auto tech with 20 years under my belt. I am an avid surfer and there is nothing worse then going out to ride and you end up with a meatball (a meatball is a yellow flag with a black circle indicating No Surfing). It totally blows after we get a good rain as the pollution from the water run off in the ocean goes off the chart which means to my pooch & I, no surfing for 10 days. Don't get me wrong, I'm not driving no Chevy Volt or Prius. I just believe that people need to take responsibility for their actions.

Here in Cali, the majority of us have smog every other year once a vehicle is X years old. Smog tests have reduced pollution more that you will ever realize. When I was a kid (in the 70's) there were days that I could not go outside to play because the smog was so bad. How do SMOG inspections reduce pollution? Either the car gets fixed or it gets junked. If it gets junked, it usually means that a newer, more efficient, less polluting vehicle replaces it.

If it was up to me, we would have a basic YEARLY safety inspection in addition to the every other year SMOG inspection. The YEARLY inspection would check Brakes, Lights, MIL Codes, Tires, Suspension and for oil leaks. This would help to ensure safe driving vehicles on the road, pollution reduction as well as help ensure fuel efficiency.

I can not tell you how many vehicles that I have worked on over the years that have steel cord hanging out of there tires or leak oil worse than then Exxon Valdez. Even better yet, vehicles that have NO brake pads left and are running caliper - to - rotor. Yet people refuse to fix their cars. Sitting in California traffic sucks, especially when it is because someone broke down for lack of any maintenance on their car. Would you want someone with brakes like this tailgating you?

California also has a CARB mandate that requires any person who works on a vehicle under 10,000 lbs to check & set the tire air pressure to what it says on the tire placard in the door (thou there are a few exceptions). For example, if you drove your vehicle into a repair shop to just have a wiper blade replaced, the tech would also have to check and set all of your air pressures accordingly as well as document it on the final repair order/invoice. Why? Someone found that a large number of cars were running tires under inflated. This resulted in a loss of fuel economy.

Correct - as of July 1, 2000 Florida ended smog checks. However, if someone sees your vehicle smoking, they car rat you out by calling a phone number. Florida Smog Checks - Emissions Regulations, FL Smog Testing Stations at DMV.org: The DMV Made Simple

I know that I have taken this thread way off course. I hope that I have opened the eyes a little more to some of the readers here. Flame me if you want... This is my view on the topic.

Other than having a part flying around inside you bell housing, what go wrong... Hmm, need I explain?

The Check Engine Light (CEL/MIL) usually will not come back on right away for these types of codes. You have to complete x amount of drive cycles before it will.

Most likely because the part the you replaced was not the actual cause of your problem. Thus, it did not fix the problem. It is possible that the part that you installed is faulty, but that is a rarity, unless you went with a non OE part (aka Autozone).

There are 2 books besides my bed, the King James Bible and my FSM. In your cause, you will need the FSM. FSM-Sentra-1996. When trying to diagnose a problem, always start with the correct FSM for your year & model.

FSM for 96 Sentra
FSM-Sentra-1996

FSM for 96 Sentra Index (Idx)
http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Sentra/1996/IDX.pdf

FSM for 96 Sentra - Engine Control System (EC)
http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Sentra/1996/EC.pdf

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) - EC-35
Missfire - EC-136
Crankshaft Position Sensor - EC-143, EC-146
Knocksensor - EC-140

If you need more help, let me know. Is it possible that the flywheel was replaced as some point with a 109 tooth version ?

I got the car with the code on. Far as parts in the bell housing...i hear NO odd sounds, nothing is banging around, ZERO problems or sounds, just the CEL being on is the problem cuz it wont pass. This car was all stock...

Right now i have it on my insurance so i've been driving it around unregistered and shit to hopefully get the mileage on it for testing so get it stickers cuz i dont wana jump through all the hoops if i'm just gonna end up parting it out or something. I work close to home so maybe i'll just drive it like it is without stickers. Not much stretch of road for cops to notice lol.

I think in conclusion i was trying to avoid taking the tranny off to have a look inside

Read the links for the FSM and trouble shoot it line by line. Replacing parts to fix a car is not the was to fix them. Find the problem and address it.

You can do it!
