Some MAF comparison
I had some MAF´s laying around and i did a played with them a little... I removed mesh on both MAF´s by the way.

EUDM SR20DE MAF (96-99 year):

JDM SR20VE MAF (97-01 year):

SR20VE body with SR20DE sensor hybrid:

Just a little interesting comparison of flow restrictions of MAF´s and getting best of both...

You should leave the mesh alone; you won't gain anything taking it out. The mesh helps to straighten the airflow inturn you get a smoother running engine.

The original SR20VE maf is best with the original hotwire element and housing. If you look closely the SR20VE hot wire housing it's like a one way check valve, reading only incoming air and not reversion or returning pulsing air.

With the SR20DE maf sensor, it will pick up the pulsing air in the intake, reading it twice.

Well, not sure about mesh, heard different opinions. I should test it.

About the rest, you are probably right but i saw few times that people put just sensor inside for example 3" alu pipe and retune it.
